Important News!

The children have worked hard and have earned their "No Homework Week"! Hooray! :) There will be no BEE books sent home this week, which means no spelling and no reading homework.

The only homework that your child will have this week is to listen to you read! Each day they will choose a book to take home. Someone in the family will read it to them that night! It is so important for our children to hear us modeling good reading. For more tips on being a positive reading role model, see the attached link: Be a Reading Role Model!
Enjoy the homework break!

A reminder that there is no school for students on Wednesday, February 1st.

This Friday, February 3rd, we will be having a Family Literacy Day at school (from 1:15-3:00). All families are welcome (parents, grandparents, aunts, etc)! All of the information is being sent home in an invitation today. The Music Man will be performing and there will be a book swap, where you can take in books from home that you no longer want and can trade them in for other used books. I hope to see lots of you at this fun event!

We are looking for the following things for Science:
- Empty water or pop bottles
- Styrofoam trays
If you have any of these items that you are not using, we would love to have them in our class.

Thanks and have a great week! :)

The New Lunch Token System

Our new lunch token system is underway! :) Today was the first Monday to order lunch tokens. Money can be sent in each Monday if you would like to order tokens. When your child gives me the money, they will get the equivalent in tokens. These tokens will be placed in a bag with their name on it. The bag will be placed in their BEE Books (in the Hive Supplies pocket for safe keeping). They will take the tokens home and then will come each day with the amount of tokens they need for their order that day.

For example, if Jane came to school with a $20 bill for tokens, I would give her $20 in tokens to take home (a mix of .25, $1 and $2). If she wanted to order soup and chocolate milk tomorrow, she would bring $2.75 worth of tokens to school to pay for her lunch. The tokens will act the same as money, and change can be made if needed (for example, if Jane only had 3-$1 tokens, I could give her a .25 token back as change). Some parents sent in a note today saying what they wanted to order for the week. I have sent the tokens home and you can just send them in each day as needed. If you have any questions, let me know!

The children do not have alphabetical order homework this week. They will still have their regular reading and sentences to do. This week is a review of sight words and each child has a different list, based on the words that they need to practice.

We are working on doubles in math. Please practice doubles at home with your child. By the end of grade 2, it should only take 3 seconds for them to answer doubles facts.
Here are the ones we are working on:
1+1=2
2+2=4
3+3=6
4+4=8
5+5=10
6+6=12
7+7=14
8+8=16
9+9=18

Have a great week!
Mrs. Roberts :)

Reminders

January's book orders are due tomorrow, January 20th.

Tomorrow is hot day day.

Our new token system starts on Monday, January 23rd. If you did not receive the notice that was sent home about tokens, or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Tokens can be bought every Monday. You can order enough tokens for one week, or for longer if you wish. All you have to do is send in a baggie with the correct amount of money for the amount of tokens you want. For example, if you send in $20, we will send your child home with $20 worth of tokens.

A Few Notes...

On Tuesday, January 17th, students will be travelling to Montague Regional High School to attend the play Beauty and the Beast. There is a small fee of $2.00. Permissions slips were sent home Tuesday, January 10th and should be back by Friday, January 13th.

This Friday, January 13th will be a hat day and/or pajama day at our school! Students can choose to wear a hat and/or pajamas for $1. All funds raised with go to Kinyinjere Primary School in Kenya.

If you have any Christmas cards that you are going to throw out, I would love to have them for my Christmas craft box! The fronts of Christmas cards are wonderful to have for seasonal crafts! :)

There are days when students may forget their warm outdoor apparel. If you have any extra hats, mittens or gloves that are in good shape, but are not being used, we would love to have them for our "oops - I forgot my things" box! :)

Just a reminder that this Friday is grilled cheese day!

Have a great day!

What are we doing in grade 2?

We are starting several new units in our class this week. Here is a quick overview of what we're working on in grade 2!

Language Arts - we will continue to work on writing "small moments" in Writer's Workshop. Students are learning about narrative writing and are completing writing pieces that are more focused on a specific topic. Our guided reading groups are going well and I'm impressed with the progress in the students' reading! Keep up the great work!

Science - we are starting a new unit this week called "Liquids and Solids". We have some very fun and interactive experiments to complete!

Social Studies - we are beginning our unit on technology and how it has changed over time. The students were able to come up with some excellent inventions for the future! Do you think that classroom blogs existed 10 years ago? :)

Math - we just completed our "Numbers to 100" unit in Math and we are starting our unit on "Addition and Subraction to 18". We got new whiteboards for our classroom to use during our daily mental math lessons! Please continue to practice numbers with your child at home - dice and card games are fun and educational at the same time! :)

Health - we have completed our "Power to Play" section in health and we will continue to focus on the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Our next focus in health will be on safety.

Can you tell that we're having a great time in grade 2? I'm excited about all the new things we are going to learn in 2012!

I hope everyone has a great week! Don't forget that Subway orders and money are due on Wednesday!

Happy New Year!

It's Great to be Back!

It's been nice getting back into our regular routines! I have enjoyed hearing about your Christmas traditions and the students have certainly had a lot to write about in Writer's Workshop! Their behaviour has been spectactular and I'm really proud of the work they've done so far in 2012. Today we wrote New Year's Resolutions. Ask your child what their goals are for this new year!

The students have decided that the next reward they would like to work towards is a "no homework week". I was a little skeptical at first, but have decided that they deserve the chance to earn a week off! Rewards generally take several weeks to earn, but they will be trying every day to earn letters to spell out that phrase!

Just a reminder that the weather is getting colder and children should be dressed appropriately. Many students are still coming to school without hats, mitts and snowpants. Crazy carpets are available during recess, but only students that have snowpants are able to use them.

Thank you for your cooperation in making sure that your child's indoor shoes are non-marking soles. Our gym floors have been re-finished and we are doing our best to ensure that they are kept in excellent condition.

It's been a great week so far! Don't forget that this Friday is hot dog day and homework sentences are due on Friday as well.
Mrs. Roberts :)
